We are bringing together national datasets and incorporating new data-sets to provide novel insights on people experiencing visual impairment.

 

The visualization showcases a map of the U.S split up by states and colored different shades of blue to exhibit the employment rates for people ages 16 - 64 in U.S. with visual impairment.

The national average for employment rate for people with visual impairment was 43.3% in 2017. The map showcases the highest rate of employment is in North Dakota with 69.4% of people experiencing visual impairment having a job. The states with the lowest employment rates are Puerto Rico and West Virginia with 24.0% and 25.6% unemployment in 2017.

There are three line charts underneath a map of the U.S. that show the employment and poverty gaps between between people who have visual impairment and the national averages. The average gaps are decreasing from 2010 to 2017.

The third line chart show cases the number of people experiencing visual impairment who are in STEM jobs. The percentage of people holding STEM jobs has increased from 2.17% in 2011 to 3.18% in 2017. The national average has increased from 4.61% in 2011 to 5.55% in 2017.

The data was collected from the American Community Survey from 2010 - 2017.
