We are bringing together national datasets and incorporating new data-sets to provide novel insights on people experiencing visual impairment.

The visualization showcases a map of the U.S split up by states and colored different shades of blue to exhibit the number of students served under IDEA in the U.S. with visual impairment.

The national number of students served under IDEA in 2018 was 24,037. California and Texas have the greatest number of students served under IDEA with the count at 2,976 and 2,978 students respectively. Many states are missing data on students served under IDEA.

There are three line charts underneath a map of the U.S. that show the national graduation and drop out rates, as well as educational attainment for students with visual impairment versus the national averages of students in the United States. For students with visual impairments, the high school graduation rate is increasing while the dropout rate is decreasing, which show that trends are getting closer to the national average.

The average high school graduation rate was 82.35% for students with visual impairment, and the national average was 85.30% in 2017. The average dropout rate was 6.97% for students with visual impairment, and the national average was 4.69% in 2017. Educational attainment has improved over time.

The data was gathered from the Department of Education IDEA Dataset for the years of 2012 - 2018. The data for educational attainment was gathered from the American Community Survey Data from 2008 - 2018.
